Hey! Happy May!
It's officially springtime! Since spring is all about new beginnings, I thought I would kick off May with a new blog series branching off from my other blog series "Trend Alert: Fashion Edition". I wanted to talk about beauty trends on my blog and what better way to name my newest blog series "Trend Alert: Beauty Edition." I know, super creative.
Hope you guys like it!
Douyin Makeup
Starting off strong, I wanted to begin with this very cool trend coming from Asia. Douyin makeup has been a popular makeup trend that began in China but is making its way into western mainstream makeup. One TikTok creator, @hayleybuix, showcases the key differences between western makeup and Douyin makeup, click here to see. “Douyin” is named after the app that is basically the Chinese version of TikTok. This method of makeup grew popular on the "Douyin" app and the trend was then named after it. This makeup trend is said to have techniques that better compliment East Asian features. This trend is not to be confused with K-Beauty considering that Korean beauty highlights more of a minimal and natural look. A post by Teen Vogue writer Sara Li defined Douyin makeup as "... typically uses shimmery eyeshadow, pigmented pink blush, and blurred lips...fairly simplistic and a successor to popular beauty trends we're already familiar with that highlights a skin-first, minimalistic style." (Li, 2023) Click here to see Li's post.
Douyin makeup is said to make you appear more "youthful" or "innocent".
Another post by Allure’s associate news editor Gabi Thorne defined Douyin makeup as “…an umbrella term for a broad makeup style, defined by soft and ethereal looks that give a doll-like appearance…the look varies depending on who creates it, three aspects remain near constants: sparkly shadow and subtle liner that opens up the eyes, heavily flushed cheeks, and a diffused lip.” (Thorne, 2023). Click here to see Thorne's post. A TikTok creator, @_itsjing, explained more characteristics of the trend even further, click here to see on TikTok. The key is to appear more soft and almost ethereal. Many beauty influencers, like Jessica Vu whose video appears above, are showing their take on the Douyin makeup trend. This trend is continuing to spread across the internet and across the world. Give this trend a try and see, if it in fact, will make you look a more whimsical version of yourself.
Icy Pastel Eye Makeup
This trend is pretty cool, no pun intended. This trend is a perfect way to incorporate the yearly "pastels for spring" trend but with a bit of a twist. Why only sport the same spring pastel trends when you can really ice out your look.
This trend revolves around cool toned colors with all shades of blues, pops of whites, and other pastel colors like lilac purples.
TikTok creator @victorialyn shows us some great examples of this trend, click here to see. I absolutely love the white eyeliner look as well as the smoked-out white eyeshadow look! This trend is something different without getting too crazy. You can be as subtle or as extra as you would like to with this trend. Give it a try!
Cloud Skin Makeup
So, here's a bit of a history lesson to explain this trend. Think about 2015-2017, when everything makeup was matte. From the matte face makeup to the quick drying lip products. Now fast forward to current makeup times when trends are revolving more around natural and dewy makeup. This makeup trend is making a resurgence from its initial emergence a few years ago. Again, from the TikTok creator @victorialyn, cloud skin makeup it's like dewy skin and matte skin had a baby, click here to see TikTok video.
To summarize the steps of this makeup trend, you start off with well moisturized, hydrated skin. Next, use cream-based products when adding your blush, concealer, and contour. Lastly, apply a light and even application of powder. Other tutorials suggest applying blush and/or highlighter after powdering. You might even dab in more concealer after powdering or use baking powder to conclude the look. Click here for a quick TikTok example. That's it! A seamless finish to your everyday makeup.
